No public money is ever kept in that safe.

On Sunday the 11th instant being in need of 5 of my own

moneys to meet retty expenses in my house, I requested my son

(age 16) to take my keys to Mr. Martin with the request that

he should ask Mr. Martin to kindly open the safe for me and take

therefrom $5, and hand same to my son. As my son is a minor I

requested my cook, who has been known to me for the last 28 years

to accompany him to Mr. Martin's office, My son inforas ne that

on his arrival at the Post Office he was told by a postman that

Mr. Martin was not in and was also asked what he wanted with

Mr. Martin. When my son had explained the purport of his call be

was told that he could go in to the building and when he went in

Mr. Martin took the keys away from him.

On being informed by my son of what had happened, 1

called on Mr. Martin to explain the facts to him, but was told by

his wife that he was not in.

With reference to the keys formerly in my possession, I

beg most respectfully to bring the following facts before the

notice of His Excellency the Governor,

The keys in the registration branch are of of no use to anyone unless the General Post Office is open: a duplicate thered

is kept on the superintendent's table for the use of anyone of the Post Office clerks (24 men in all) who may be left on late duty and they are kept by any such person who may use the keys

The keys of the entrance to at a late hour until the next day. the building are not kept by me or any of the registration office clerka, & such being the case, it is an impossibility when the offices are oren for anyone to go into or come out of the
